What are prefixes? A prefix is added to the start of a word to change its meaning. Prefixes are not words by themselves and therefore they cannot stand on their own. For example: re- means again, un- means not, pre- means before, dis- means the opposite, im- means not, non- means not, mis- means wrong... In these examples the prefixes are in bold.
