Infinitives: What are Infinitives?

What are infinitives? An infinitive is the verb in its most basic form. Infinitives are usually preceeded with 'to'. For example: to play, to eat, to jump... However, the infinitive form is not always preceeded with 'to'. For example: I play all the time. I eat all the time. I jump all the time. In these examples the infinitives are in bold. Infinitive Sentence Examples

Infinitives are the base form of a verb that can function as a noun, adjective, or adverb. Check out the sentences below and our free infinitives poster.

Infinitives:
Purpose of action: I will study hard to pass the exam.
Subject: To run in that race will be tough.
Direct object: I love to write in English.
Subject complement: His ambition is to protect species.
Adjective: This is the best place to learn English.
Adverb: I cannot wait to see.
After an adjective: It is important to be kind.
After a noun or pronoun (referring to a person): I invited my dad to attend the opening.
Used with a question word: Does he understand what to do?
