Gerund Definition and Examples

What are gerunds? Gerunds are words that are formed with verbs but act as nouns. All gerunds end in -ing. Here are some examples of gerunds: running, swimming, eating, drinking, watching... In these examples the gerunds are in bold. Check out our gerunds infographic below.

Gerund Sentence Examples

Practice 6 types of gerunds. A gerund is a noun formed from a verb. Something to remember is gerunds are words that are formed with verbs but act as nouns. Present participles do not act as nouns. Rather, they act as modifiers or complete continuous verbs. Have a go and make your own sentences with the gerunds poster above and sentences below.

Subject: Jogging is my newest hobby.
Subject complement: My preferred exercising is jogging.
Direct object: I like jogging.
Indirect object: My brother gave jogging a try.
Object complement: I see myself jogging five days a week.
Object of a preposition: I reserved two hours this Saturday for jogging.
