Contractions in English: What is a Contraction?

A contraction is a word or phrase that has been abbreviated by removing one or more letters. There are two main types of contractions. One is using apostrophes to replace letters and the second is compressing words. For example: is not = isn't and Mister = Mr. In these examples, the contractions are in bold. Contractions are shortened forms of words, in which some letters are omitted. Have a go and make your own sentences with the contractions list above and below.

I am = I'm
That is = That's
It is = It's
You are = You're
I had = I'd
I will = I'll
I have = I've
There is = There's
They are = They're
Will not = Won't
Is not = Isn't
Are not = Aren't
Must not = Mustn't
Mister = Mr.
Captain = Capt.
Doctor = Dr.
Professor = Pro.
