Types of Adjectives

Adjectives are describing words. They describe nouns or pronouns. 'Young,' 'blue,' and 'happy' are examples of adjectives. This page has examples of the different types of adjectives. An adjective is a word that tells us more about a noun. It describes or changes a noun (The small rabbit was white). In these examples, the adjective is in bold and the noun that it modifies is in italics. Check out our adjectives definitions. Using Adjectives in Sentences

Practice sentences that include attributive adjectives, classifying adjectives, descriptive adjectives, demonstrative adjectives... and improve your understanding of descriptive words. Master adjectives such as possessive adjectives with this comprehensive guide. Have a go and make your own sentences with the types of adjectives poster above and sentences below.

  • Attributive adjectives: An attributive adjective comes before a noun. For example: It was a wet evening. My friend has a young face. 'Wet' and 'young' are attributive.

  • Absolute adjectives: An absolute adjective is an adjective, such as perfect or essential, with a meaning that is usually not capable of being intensified or compared. For example: My test score is perfect. It is essential that you write with a pen.

  • Classifying adjectives: A classifying adjective is used to divide and classify people or things into particular groups. For example: An animal doctor. It's a military vehicle. These are confidential papers. 'Animal', 'military' and 'confidential' are classifying.

  • Comparative adjectives: Comparative adjectives are used to compare differences between the two objects they modify (bigger, uglier, quicker, taller). They are used in sentences where two nouns are compared. For example: Noun (subject) + verb + comparative adjective + than + noun (object). For example: Gary is bigger than Tom. The giraffe is taller than the elephant.

  • Demonstrative adjectives: Demonstrative adjectives are special adjectives or determiners used to identify or express the relative position of a noun in time or space. A demonstrative adjective comes before all other adjectives in the noun phrase. Demonstrative adjectives are this, that, these and those. For example: Give me that red scarf. This time I will do my homework.

  • Descriptive adjectives: A descriptive adjective is an adjective that modifies a noun or pronoun by describing it or expressing its quality. For example: My sister has a beautiful face. They ate some tasty food. 'Beautiful' and 'tasty' are descriptive.

  • Indefinite adjectives: An indefinite adjective is used to describe a noun in a non-specific way. Examples of indefinite adjectives are another, some, every, plenty, more, much... For example: Every day I think of travelling. I need to get some water for the dog. 'Every' and 'some' are indefinite.

  • Interrogative adjectives: An interrogative adjective is a word that modifies a noun by asking a question. For example: Whose shirt was that? Which film do you like more? 'Whose' and 'Which' are interrogatives.

  • Numeral adjectives: A numeral adjective is an adjective that tells us about how many or how much or in what order the noun is in. One, two, five, ten, first, second, third, last, all, some, few are common examples of numeral adjectives. For example: Two kids make a family. Few cats are unhealthy. 'Two' and 'few' are numeral.

  • Quantitative adjectives: Quantitative adjectives are used to describe a noun and pronoun with quantity (numbers). For example: He has 40 pigs. I have been standing here for thirty minutes. '40' and 'thirty' are quantitative.

  • Proper adjectives: A proper adjective is an adjective that comes from a proper noun. For example: Anne is an English player. Peter is an Indonesian singer. I love Italian food. 'English', 'Indonesian' and 'Italian' are proper.

  • Possessive adjectives: Possessive adjectives are my, our, your, his, their, her, and its. For example: This is my house. I lost your keys. 'My' and 'your' are possessive.
